Audition

vickyloveu asked: Hi, I was wondering do you know where I can find auditions listing in ny? I've heard of backstage. Do you know any? Also, do you know where I can get afforadable headshots?

Hi! Backstage is definitely the best. You can get the online subscription and set your preferences to have the casting notices that are right for you emailed to you daily. They also offer info for the best schools and headshot photographers in the city.

Actors Access (www.actorsaccess.com) is another biggie with casting directors.  You can pay per submission here (at $2 a pop) or buy a yearly sub for about $70.  It depends on how often you feel you use it.  These two resources are the best for actual ROLES in the city. Especially PAYING roles.

Casting Networks and NYCastings.com have a few smaller, low or no paying roles to build up your resume and reel.  Those run about $5-$20/month.

For Headshots, look in Backstage for highly rated photographers.  Don’t make an appointment with ANYONE unless you can see their work online.  If you don’t like their photos, don’t call them. I don’t care how cheap they are offering their photos for.  Unless the photos are completely free (a Trade For Pics or TFP), then you have a right to be choosy.  Also, doing a couple of TFPs are fun, just to have some fashion shots, and get comfortable posing for a camera.

My advice, get a good acting coach. Audition for some plays. When you’re confident that this play is your BEST work, and that agents will be DYING to have you on their roster, invite EVERY industry  person to come see your play. Comp their tickets if possible.  Strike.  Repeat.  Always work on your play and rehearse with your coach outside of rehearsals.  Keep working even if you don’t have an agent.  You need to work to get work and to get noticed.  And working keeps you in practice!

Hope this helps!
